“This is not a soft drink”, in which a quietly defiant boy takes umbrage when he finds Irn-Bru labelled as a soft drink in a Glasgow corner shop, is the September/October winner of the Thinkboxes award for TV advertising creativity.
The commercial, directed by Elliott Power, includes the return of the brand’s well-known “Made in Scotland from girders” ad line with a fresh twist, as its young star explains what the drink stands for in the modern world in a rousing speech on behalf of everyday rebels.“TV has played an integral role in communicating Irn-Bru’s distinctive personality – and continues to do so,” AG Barr brand director Kenny Nicholson says.“One of our core strategic objectives for the brand is to drive desire nationally, and TV advertising is a very effective way to reach a large and diverse audience that can, in turn, unlock growth.“Ultimately, we want to build an emotional connection with consumers and create a lasting impression that goes well beyond just product features, and TV can help us achieve that.”
